Vocabulary Words 4-30-12: Last blog!

As school comes to a end, I would like to reflect upon the past year. In the beginning of the year, all of the students were tremulous as they met their new teachers and prepared for the daunting year ahead. When everyone became used to the quotidian schedule, it was clear that each student became more intrepid. Throughout the year, massive amounts of schoolwork and studying did not allow me to work as a babysitter as much as I would like, so now I am impecunious when I go shopping. Even though everyone secretly hopes that the school will be razed to the ground, I will miss all of the teachers that I got to know this year.

Vocabulary Words 4-16-12: What is your favorite of the four books?

If I had to choose my favorite of the four books that we read, I would choose Little Bee. One of the best parts of this book is that Little Bee is impassive and almost haughty when she thinks of herself in America, yet has been through so much in her short life. Also, this book is not obsolete, as immigration continues to be an important issue with stringent regulations all around the world.

Vocabulary Words 4-9-12: What was your favorite book that you had to read for high school?

When I am being retrospective, I often look back on the books that I have read for high school and what I learned from them. I usually prefer books that do not have fatuous grandiloquence, but are simple and decorous. My favorite book that I have read for high school is Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. I enjoy the candor that is present in Shakespeare's works and appreciate writing as an art form.

Vocabulary Words 4-2-12: Why do you like the Hunger Games series?

Although Suzanne Collins is upbraided for the brutality of her novels, I find them excited and I believe that they are an interesting take on communism. From the very beginning Katniss is a winsome character that gains support from all readers. When she is subjected to abject humiliation and degradation during the Hunger Games, I felt the emotions that she felt and found myself lost in the story. One of my favorite parts was when Katniss stopped being quiescent in Mockingjay and became the rebel icon.

Vocabulary Words 3-26-12: What do you want to be when you grow up?

When I grow up, I want a career that seems very quixotic. I would like to be an actress or a writer for a comedic T.V. show. I would be able to expurgate scripts that were too offensive, and help find a panacea to boredom. However, a career in television is extremely difficult to obtain, and would require that I be obsequious in every job that I have.

Vocabulary Words 3-25-12: Who is your favorite Actor/Actress? Why?

Although the reputation of actors and actresses tends to depreciate over a period of time, my favorite actor is from the 70s. He starred in The Rocky Horror Picture Show as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a film which was extremely efficacious- as it ended up having a cult. His name is Tim Curry and his greatness it immutable. My favorite actor that is popular in this decade is Johnny Depp. It is never precarious that he will perform well and he is extremely funny.

Vocabulary Words 3-12-12: What do you think of the open gradebook?

I think that the gradebook prevents students from beguiling their parents into thinking that they are doing better than they really are. Although some parents may make callous remarks about bad grades, the gradebook's good qualities overshadow its flaws. My parents know that I tell the truth to them, so they don't feel the need to look online to debunk what I have told them. However, the gradebook has been very helpful in motivating me to get better grades.

Vocabulary Words 3-5-12: If you could drop one class from your schedule which one would it be and why?

If I could make one class no longer abide in my schedule, I would choose Family Living. Last year I chose two different art electives as my options, but got financial literacy and web design. Even though finance is a required class, it is going to become an online course, which would allow me to focus on my other subjects more. I vehemently believe that taking that course for a half a year would have wasted my time. The only class that I was able to join without changing my schedule was Family Living. Although penology for children can be interesting, I would prefer to not be in that class.

Macbeth 3-2-12

  • Where did this curse come from?
    • This curse came from the use of witchcraft and detailed explanation of black-magic rituals. These actions caused people to attempt to become witches. At the time that Macbeth was written, people were extremely superstitious and believed that witches did not like their secrets being revealed. The people believed that revenge was taken in the form of a curse over the play, and that it would never have a successful show. Over the years this has proven to be true, which further enforces the fear surrounding Macbeth.
  • Which ones were the most shocking from the list of terrible things that happened during the performances of Macbeth?
    • Each of the terrible things that happened during Macbeth are horrible and cause even the most hesitant theater fanatic would be superstitious about the play. The most shocking thing that happened was when an actor had a heart attack on stage during the beginning of Act III. When I imagine this happening, I picture confusion at first from the actors and the audience as they expect the character to get up. Then I picture chaos in the theater, as most people don't expect to see death when they go to see a theater production.
  • If you had to avoid the curse, which strategy would you use?
    •  For my whole life I have had a connection to theater in some form. I will never say "good luck" before a show and Macbeth is the same way. My strategy to avoid the curse is to avoid the show altogether. This includes not saying the name of it in a theater or backstage. If for some reason I had to perform in Macbeth, and I had the power to change the script, I would make the witches other minions of Lucifer and change Macbeth's name in order to avoid the curse.
  • Do you believe that there is a curse?
    • I am usually not superstitious, but when it comes to theater I would rather not take the chance. There are thousands of things that can go wrong in any show, and even if the curse does not exist, if someone says Macbeth or shows nervousness about performing it, the other actors will be frightened and make more mistakes. Due to this I will err on the side of caution by not causing any problems.

Vocabulary Words 2-22-12: What did you do instead of watching the oscars?

During the week off my family and I went on a family vacation to Costa Rica. On Sunday I spent 12 hours traveling simply to get home. Unfortunately, I had a migraine on the plane and my face was pallid as can be. I felt that it took extreme temerity to make it through the flight without crying or becoming querulous, especially when my sisters thought that I was lying and repeatedly said pejorative things.

Stephen King Mini Stories

My favorite story out of the 5 mini stories by Stephen King was "Earliest Memory". This story was about the first injury that Stephen could remember having, which was a bee sting followed by 5 broken toes. It was concise and to the point, yet still had enough detail to paint a picture of the scene. I did not feel bored during this story I was eager to see what would happen to the hapless two year old Stephen King. As I was reading I was thinking about Stephen King's views and advice with regard to proper description and found that I enjoyed the amount of detail used in this story, and the fact that I still had room to creatively picture the setting and characters.

Vocabulary Words 2-6-12: What was your favorite part of the Superbowl?

My favorite part of the Superbowl this year was the Cirque De Soleil trapeze artist performing. He was fastidious when he did his act and the control and bravery that he showed was awe-inspiring. While I do love trapeze, tight rope, and other various circus acts, it would take a lot to goad me into performing in front of such a large, expectant crowd. Overall, this performance was effervescent and the most interesting part of the Superbowl.

Vocabulary Words 1-30-12: What is your favorite day of the week?

A large percentage of my week is composed of work. This makes me abhor Mondays because I know that I have a lot of work ahead of me. Every day that I have to calibrate my alarm clock to wake me up at 6:30am is a day that I will not enjoy very much. In addition, my agnates are extremely cranky when thy wake up early. Because of these reasons, my favorite day of the week is a Saturday, and is connate because my sisters and parents share this trait.

Vocabulary Words 1-17-12: My hardest midterm will be... because....

It is amorphous which midterm will be the most difficult for me. Each class needs a different type of studying, especially those that constantly go off on tangents. During midterms it is clear that the classes that must be constantly quelled by the teacher are going to be the most salient to study for. That being said, my hardest midterm will most likely be my Spanish midterm. Every day we manage to get less and less done and have more to study for independently.

Vocabulary Words 1-10-12: Describe your favorite movie!!

When I attempt to elucidate the Rocky Horror Picture Show, I can never manage to make it pellucid enough for people to understand. It begins in Denton, Ohio nicknamed "The Home of Happiness". A young couple become engaged and decide to meet the man who's science refresher course brought them together, Dr. Scott. On the way they pass a castle that has a malevolent energy, but ignore it until they get a flat tire. The only place around for miles is the castle, and it is pouring outside. The couple decide that it is their only option, so they walk to the house in the hopes of finding a phone. Unfortunately, they find a mysterious staff at the castle, and meet a transvestite named Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Brad and Janet, the engaged couple, end up trapped in the house and go through experiences that they could never have imagined. When all hope was gone for the young couple, Dr. Scott appears at the castle, looking for his nephew who was killed and eaten by the transvestite. They all are taken over by the alien doctor until the servants, Magenta and Riff-Raff, claim that Dr. Frank-N-Furter's lifestyle on this planet is too extreme. They then kill the doctor and let the humans go. Although Dr. Scott, Janet, and Brad escaped the castle, nothing could palliate the fear and pain that their memories caused

Romantic Literature 1-6-12:

·      After the confrontation between Heathcliff and Edgar, Catherine becomes ill and spirals out of control. She is her usual dramatic self, picturing that she is at Wuthering Heights and crying over her lack of visitors. It is unclear whether Catherine is actually sick or if it is mental illness or if she is just trying to get attention, but it is clear that she is letting her emotions distract her from rationality. One of the characteristics of Romantic literature is emotions winning over rationality, which occurs a lot throughout Wuthering Heights, proving that it is a romantic novel as well as a gothic book.
·      Gothic literature and romanticism both have supernatural as a characteristic. There are many examples of supernatural events, the most recent being Catherine in chapter 12 when she claimed that she was sick. She was raving about her childhood and claimed that she could see Heathcliff and Wuthering Heights outside her window. Nelly says that this was impossible, but there is no proof other than Catherine’s tendency to exaggerate and create drama.
